Here, have this B788 registered as XC-MEX

Kinja'd!!!

XC means its a government aircraft, but it doesn’t matter because it normally goes by the name of Tango Papa zero one; a name exclusive to any aircraft carrying the president of the United States...

Of Mexico.

Now, it’s quite a wierd airplane to explain because costs vary between 220 million dollars, 500 million dollars and 700 million dollars depending on whom you ask.

Lets play “the price is right” on a new 787-8 with a customized interior and state-of-the-art defense mechanisms and avionics.

The plane itself, maybe $100 mil? The outfitting all depends on which of the president’s donors gets the no-bid contract. Probably close to a billion if it’s self-contained like AF1.

Tango papa...phonetically, “I have a potato”. Nice.

I hear its quite unusual for anyone to pay list price for aircraft, specially larger ones. So yeah, it could be any of those three numbers.

Its AMLO’s rallying cry that Mexico has the most expensive presidential aircraft of the world and that isn’t cool.

I have no idea, but I can tell you that the custom refrigerators on Air Force One are going to cost $24 million.

Vc-25 is too old, you guys should’ve gotten the 747-8.

I know its expensive but your president needs a jet and I personally feel that it is absolutely reasonable that you get one.

Now, in the case of Mexico, we should’ve kept the 757 or used comercial jets. Honestly our country doesn’t need such infrastructure.

I saw that plane parked at KCEF last year.

That’s a big risk by the Mexican government tbh

It is a gorgeous aircraft.

But like most gorgeous things, it was quite expensive

And now we are getting used Russian -8s... Nice looking 787.

It is! It is also the reason why we should not have this plane. If we didn’t have the infrastructure to make it properly we sure as hell did not need it in the first place!

However, y’all be weary of CISEN. They are amazing at their jobs. I’d argue that they are better at their job than the NSA. I bet that the second the plane landed in Mexico a team of experts checked it for risks.

Instead of keeping such an old aircraft running you guys should’ve gotten a 748.

given the price is 200-300mil I can see how the cost can easily double customizing it.

But come on man, only an idiot would pay list price on a large aircraft.

I think the figure is definitely 700,000,000 but the government says it was 220,000,000.

We didn’t need that plane and now we have it.

We got two of them, from the Russians, ironically.

That seems relatively unreasonable.

Its a catchy headline but the planes never left sunny California.

Think of it as buying a used California car; practically new!

I don’t have the actual figure, but this aircraft was relatively cheap as far as new-build 787 pricing goes. It was one of the first 20 787s manufactured, and was part of a group of aircraft known as the “Terrible Teens”. As such it was manufactured before the manufacturing process was dialed in and as a result needed considerable rework to make it meet design standards which added weight which cut down the range. Many airlines rejected these first few aircraft and decided to wait for craft that met the standards and specs.

Kinja'd!!!

As a result of these modifications they’re a tad overweight, and therefore the range isn’t where it should be. As a commercial airliner this would be a major issue, but for a VIP aircraft that doesn’t carry much payload this isn’t really a big deal as it will never be operated anywhere near maximum weight. They’re still safe to fly on, but heavier than anticipated.

Numerous airlines snapped up these bargain 787s for use on shorter routes where range isn’t an issue, but the VIP realm is where they really excel. Although it may initially give the impression that ridiculous sums of money were spent for something seemingly frivolous, the actual costs involved, both the initial purchase price and the cost to operate it over its lifetime, are not as much as one would expect. Instead of a used aircraft, governments and VIPs can have newer aircraft at similar or lower cost, and will have something that will be in service longer and require less maintenance than a used aircraft.

Interesting! Considering our previous jet was a 757, even if it was a terrible teen it is still an upgrade. If it is a terrible teen thatt might explain the low official cost of the government.

I can see the financial sense in the long run. But I still think it was a waste of money, Mexico doesn’t need this plane at all!

In the U.K. we don’t even have them.

There are a couple of Airbus Voyager A330 (out of the fleet of 14), one will be used for VIP transport while a second will step in if the first is being used elsewhere or down for maintenance.

They don’t get used solely for VIP transport but pay their way doing refuelling duties and transport.

Mexico is a poor country with pockets of wealth. If a government allows itself to believe that its reasonable to have such an aircraft it means they live so deep within those pockets that they don’t realize how messed up we are.

I love Embraer, and now that Airbus and Bombardier cozied up I think boeing is looking for a partnership with them.

But even an an Embraer E jet is too much, the solutionis simply not having a god damn plane!I know that for a 120,000,000 inhabitant nation 200 million dollars or 700 million dollars is basically nothing, but it says lots of how we treat the rest of our money!

If the government chose the single jet route there would be absolute uproar with the tax payers.

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/raf-reveals-vip-configured-voyager-427048/

The Royal Air Force’s VIP-roled Airbus Defence & Space A330 Voyager has been revealed ahead of its first deployment – transporting the UK defence secretary Michael Fallon to a NATO summit in Warsaw on 8 July.

The specially adapted Voyager (ZZ336) has been configured with 58 business-class seats, rather than the usual 291 economy seats.

Announced as part of the UK government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review in November 2015, the modification is claimed to be “significantly cheaper” than chartering flights for government officials or the royal family.

It will still be able to function as a tanker, and will reside at RAF Brize Norton alongside the rest of the Voyager fleet. The VIP configuration will be able to be fitted to any of the other A330s in the RAF inventory, should ZZ336 be out of service.

That seems relatively unreasonable.

Not really. You can’t exactly go down to Home Depot and grab a Kenmore side-by-side and load it in. They have to be custom made, aviation grade, FAA certifiable, all that. It’s a huge custom job.
